When you’re comparing roofing contractors in Indianapolis, almost everyone will tell you they do good work. What’s harder to find is a way to check that claim before you sign anything. That’s part of why we became an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, and it’s a credential we don’t take lightly.
What Owens Corning Preferred Contractor Actually Means
Owens Corning is one of the largest shingle manufacturers in the country, and they don’t hand out their Preferred Contractor status to just anyone. To earn it, a roofing company has to meet ongoing requirements around licensing, insurance, installation training, and customer satisfaction. Owens Corning checks in on all of it, not just once, but continuously.
That’s different from a contractor simply saying they “install Owens Corning products.” Plenty of companies buy shingles off a supplier’s shelf without any formal relationship with the manufacturer. Preferred Contractor status means Owens Corning has reviewed our work, our licensing, and our track record, and put their name behind it.
Why This Should Matter to You as a Homeowner
Here’s the part that actually affects your roof. Owens Corning’s stronger warranties, including their non-prorated material warranties on certain shingle lines, are only available through Preferred Contractors. If a homeowner in Greenwood or Franklin has a lesser-installed roof develop a manufacturing defect five years down the road, the warranty terms can look very different depending on who installed it.
There’s also the training piece. Preferred Contractors get access to manufacturer-specific installation training, which matters more than people expect. A shingle roof isn’t just shingles. It’s underlayment, starter strips, ridge caps, ventilation, and flashing details, all installed to the manufacturer’s specifications. Get any of that wrong and you can void a warranty without ever knowing it happened, sometimes not until you file a claim and find out the coverage isn’t there.
When we tell a homeowner we’re installing an Owens Corning system, we mean the whole system, done the way the manufacturer designed it to work together.
How to Verify a Contractor’s Certification Yourself
You don’t have to take any roofer’s word for it, including ours. Owens Corning maintains a contractor locator on their website where you can search by location and confirm Preferred Contractor status directly. It takes about thirty seconds and it’s the single easiest way to separate a real certification from a sales pitch.
We’d encourage you to do this with any contractor you’re considering, not just us. If a company claims a manufacturer certification and can’t be found in that search, that’s worth asking about directly before you sign a contract.
What This Looks Like on an Indianapolis Roof
Central Indiana roofs take a real beating. We get hard freezes and ice in the winter, and then hail and straight-line wind storms roll through in the spring and summer, sometimes both in the same year. Shingles here need to handle that range, and installation quality is what determines whether they actually do.
We see this most clearly on repair calls in neighborhoods across Greenwood, Center Grove, and the south side of Indianapolis, where a roof installed without attention to manufacturer specs starts failing at the seams years before it should, usually right around the ridge caps or the valleys where water moves fastest. A properly installed Owens Corning system, backed by a warranty that actually holds up, is one less thing for a homeowner to worry about during the next big storm.
We also install GAF, CertainTeed, Atlas, and Mule-Hide products depending on what a job calls for, but the Owens Corning Preferred Contractor status is one of the clearest, most checkable credentials we can point to when a homeowner asks us to prove we’re the real deal.
What to Ask Any Roofer About Certifications
If you’re getting quotes from multiple contractors in the Indianapolis area, a few questions can tell you a lot fast:
- Are you a manufacturer-certified installer, and for which brands?
- Can I verify that certification directly with the manufacturer?
- Does that certification affect my warranty coverage?
- What happens to my warranty if the roof isn’t installed to manufacturer spec?
A contractor who’s confident in their credentials will have quick, specific answers. Vague answers are usually a sign there’s nothing behind the claim.
